But first the plugs.
Sunshine number 23 is up.

I hate to repeat myself.
Malach went on a bit of a rant at the WoW today. But since it will elicit more comments here, I reprint here. Comment, especially those of you I am aiming at.

The Problem with Generation Y
Malach is from Generation X.

I can recall things like no internet, nor cell phones, no PC's is every home, no Cable Television, Rotary Phones, the Cold War, The USSR, etc. The first time I was required to write a paper on a PC was my second year of college (1992), before that I used a typewriter. I remember my parents first cell phone, it consisted of a huge ass phone, with an attached battery briefcase. I remember when MTV only played videos and the NBA Dream Team always won the gold.

Perhaps I am just at that "When I was your age stage". But I have a real problem with Generation Y, or as I call them the "internet generation", and I only figured out today what my problem with them is.

Malach runs a men's softball team, and on this team there is a group of us who are my age (35ish), and then there is another group that is 18-25. We are all friends, or friendly enough with each other, and mostly get along. Malach basically manages the team, does all the administrative work, and handles the team money. He is actually the one teams founder. Every year, we have a pre-season meeting, to go over administrative stuff, new rules, new teams, collect team dues, and brainstorm about the team and team issues. So, Malach gave the team 3 weeks notice to show up to this usually hour long meeting. Some people informed me they would not be there, fine.

Now today was the day of the meeting, and the wife informs me in the morning that all of the younger portion of the team was not going to the meeting. They did not call or e-mail me. So basically the 6 members of the team around my age showed up, and the rest of the team, again who had 3 weeks notice, did not, only telling my wife, and not me, the night before. Now granted, this is not life or death, or work, but still . . .

I look across at those that are 25 and younger and this is what I see. People who don't care about responsibility, and if the situation interferes with "playtime" they aren't interested. At my full time job, hardly anyone working there under the age of 27. Those under that age who have been hired have all been terminated because of the exact above issue. They don't care, they don't take responsibility, and do stuff like the above. They don't know the proper protocol for interacting with real people ... they are so used to the internet, e-mail, text and instant messaging. They are so used to socializing over technology, they don't know the rules of real socialization. And it is not just locally, I see it everyday from a very young MySpace generation.

And it is not just softball and work. Look at sexual relationships, men and women have this "hooking up" attitude about sex. One night stands among those under the age of 25 are very common, and girls are as bad as the guys. It is really sad. I see it to, the partying, the stuff I did in college, my just out of college friends party like they are still in college. Think nothing of drinking most nights of the week, and think nothing of drunk driving.

I don't know, maybe I am just pissed cause I feel that people older that 18 should have more responsibility for themselves. It is all instant gratification with little care for other people. I see it in this generation, i see it my younger clients. Maybe I am just getting old.

You are Listening too . .
Here, There, and Everywhere, by the Beatles off of Revolver. Again, just show how interesting the album is, the Beatles slipped in a song that was more remiscient of their 1963 hits that other things off their album. The Beatles themselves freely admitted infuence from Pet Sounds on this song, and were attempting to recreate The Beach Boys with the song. McCartney also states it is one his favorite Beatles songs.

The song is know like most of the songs in this part of the Beatles timeling for it bittersweet melody and harmonizing voices. It also feature McCartney singing at his highest range, McCartney admitting he was going for Marianne Faithful. McCartney's vocals are also multi tracked.

This is also a reflective relationship song, obviously referring to his rocky relationship with Jane Asher at the time. The song to me is a very classic late 50's doo wop style song, with the obvious Beach Boys style harmonizing and the vocal recording tricks added. I also has a quick 70's style Chicago ochestral burst at the end. Another song off the album, Got to Get You into My Life, could have been done by Chicago.

The Lettermen had a huge hit with this song, it was almost perfectly written for that style of band.

Malach's Quote of the Day.
So blind is the curiosity by which mortals are possessed, that they often conduct their minds along unexplored routes, having no reason to hope for success, but merely being willing to risk the experiment of finding whether the truth they seek lies there. ... I do not deny that sometimes in these wanderings they are lucky enough to find something true. But I do not allow that this argues greater industry on their part, but only better luck. - René Descartes

I'm Only Sleeping by the Beatles off of Revolver. A very interesting dreamlike song, that has a lot of recording tricks in it. Many people thought the song was about drugs, but in acutuality it was about Lennon's joy of staying in bed and being lazy. Third song off the album, the song makes extensive use of multiple voice recordings, one of the first beatles songs to do so, creating the dreamlike state. In addition the rythmn guitar is Lennon on acoustic, and highly compressed, the lead is even more interesting. Harrison wrote a solo, then played physically backward, and on top of that, the recording was also reversed creating the very strange guitar sound, again very dreamlike. In addition McCartney's harmony vocals are highly compressed and dualized.

In addition before the second bridge, you can also hear a barely audible voice, probably Lennon's say "Yawn, Paul" and then about 2 seconds after, a slightly more audible Yawn. This was a part of their early experiments in ambient sounds withing the studio.

Also interestingly The Backstreet Boys, did a cover of this song which happens to be an extremely unpopular cover.

Ahh, what a nice waste of money.
So, they basically send astronauts up there to fool around? Sign me up, I am way behind on my webcomics.

Don't get the Zombie Gods mad, go read the new Fetus-X. Also, there is a new poem from Twisted Darkness. It is called, My Death, Death Poem. Not a bad piece, and so far, has some pretty good reviews.

Guatemalans.
Ok, Malach is not short by any means, much taller that your average male, but not say professional athlete tall. So, you all know reading this blog, that there was a huge illegal immigrant bust in New Bedford some weeks back. The organization Malach works for provided legal help to immigrants, so needless to say, the office I work in has become a triage center for those busted, and their families. Malach has been little help as his Spanish consists of Dora the Explorer phrases, but I have helping by emptying the garbage and general housecleaning. You see, my office is on the first floor (make sense consider I deal with the disabled). Me and only two other casemanager have offices on the first floor. That leave two extra offices, and two conference rooms, all which have been taken over by immigration services.

Needless to say the building is constantly filled with people from Latin America, mostly Guatemalans, some Mexicans, El Salvadoreans (yeah I asked not one of them has ever heard of Toyi), Hondurans, Mayans, and the like. I must say this . . . Latin Americans are VERY short people. One of my co-workers is 5'8" and even he feels tall among them.

None today buckos, sorry. Been super busy with work and crap like that.

You are Listening too. . .
Eleanor Rigby, by the Beatles, of course dedicated to Angry Man, not becuase he is lonely, but just because.

One of the Beatles most unique, popular, and recognizable songs, mainly a McCartney tune, but there seems to be agreement that Lennon contributed a bit to the song. With the George Martin's 8 string orchestric composition and it's striking lyrics about old age, loneliness, and death; this continued the departure from poppy love songs that began with Rubber Soul. Especially for a mostly McCartney piece, this was a very dark song for him (Most of his songs were meloncholic on this album, his love life was falling apart), as well as a few others on this album (I will play For No One, later). McCartney tells an interesting story about how the song began.

"I was sitting at the piano when I thought of it. The first few bars just came to me, and I got this name in my head... 'Daisy Hawkins picks up the rice in the church'. I don't know why. I couldn't think of much more so I put it away for a day. Then the name Father McCartney came to me, and all the lonely people. But I thought that people would think it was supposed to be about my Dad sitting knitting his socks. Dad's a happy lad. So I went through the telephone book and I got the name McKenzie.".

As McCartney adjusted the song a bit, it became more about loneliness. Suprisingly, the name Eleanor Rigby came out of McCartney subconcious, while he stated he got the first name from a movie his then girlfriend Jane Asher was in, they later found out there was a old grave in Liverpool of a woman who died in 1939, with the same name.

Also, you immediatley notice, none of the Beatles play instruments on the track, though Lennon and Harrison provide backing vocals. Backing is a string octet composed of four violins, two cellos, and two violas all working off a score written by producer George Martin. Martin admits the score is influenced heavily from the movie Psycho.

All though the song was not the first pop hit to deal with death and loneliness (Leader of Pack was the first), the Beatles had taken a meloncholic vision of death to the top of the pop charts with this song. Several songs came after similar in subject and mood, Sounds of Silence, and Paint it Black were all released with in 6 months of Eleanor Rigby. This song, by many is also considered the mid point of the Beatles career and evolution; from a live playing pop band, to a band more akin to rock, psychedelica, and experimental studio music.

Also interestingly enough, this was a double A side with Yellow Submarine.

Holy Frak! What a season ending episode. Of course, like Malach predicted, Starbuck is back, now whether she is a cylon, a ghost, or something in between we will see. Man, they are adding the paranoia, and confusion . . . AND NO FRAKIN' NEW EPISODES UNTIL '08! At least Sci Fi wants 22 episodes as opposed to 13 like the past two seasons. Hopefully they will be smart and replay the first two seasons during the break. In addition there is something on the site about a 2 hours special in 2007 4th quater.

Some more Beatlemania?
Well, we started on Revolver yesterday, but what were some of the major events around it's release (Aug 1966). Well, beyond the Beatles are "bigger that Jesus controversy"; because of threats toward Lennon, a firecracker thrown at him that they thought was gunfire, and the incidents in Manilla, they all together stopped touring, which in a way, created a greater band, as they spent more time in the studios, and had more time off. Interesting quote from Harrison about ending touring: "We'd done about 1,400 live shows and I certainly felt this was it," said George Harrison commenting on their last American concert at Candlestick Park. "It was nice to be popular, but when you saw the size of it, it was ridiculous, and it felt dangerous because everybody was out of hand. Even the cops were out of line....It was a very strange feeling. For a year or so I'd been saying, "Let's not do this anymore.' And then it played itself out, so that by 1966 everybody was feeling, 'We've got to stop this.' I don't know exactly where in 1966, but obviously after the Philippines we thought, 'Hey, we've got to pack this in.'"

In September, George Harrison made his way to India to study sitar under Ravi Shankar, which would later develop into some interest for all the Beatles in Eastern thought. Another very significant event, John Lennon meets Yoko Ono in September of that year (more on Yoko later). Lennon also made his most significant explanation of the bigger than Jesus controversy at the end of the year: "I believe Jesus was right, Buddha was right, and all of those people like that are right. They're all saying the same thing - and I believe it. I believe what Jesus actually said - the basic things he laid down about love and goodness - and not what people say he said....If Jesus being more popular means...more control, I don't want that. I'd sooner they'd all follow us even if it's just to dance and sing for the rest of their lives. If they took more interest in what Jesus - or any of them - said, if they did that, we'd all be there with them." Interestingly, Malach's thoughts on religion exactly.

Pat Tillman.
I have a real problem with this. For those of you that don't know, Tillman quit the NFL in his prime, forsaking millions of dollars to go fight in Afghanistan. He was killed in combat, and rightly or wrongly so made a great American hero, and propoganda tool. Here are the issues. He was killed by friendly fire. The Army did not reveal that until 5 months later. Here's where they got stuck. You see, friendly fire deaths are not all that uncommon in war. They had built Tillman into GI Joe. GI Joe can't be killed by his own troops. So, they were stuck with somehow tarnishing Tillman's image, or covering it up. You see your average GI is not famous. So, when they are killed in friendly fire, it is just kid of hush hush. These officers were just doing what they typically did. It is military culture, not a coverup.

Plugs.
Plugs over the past couple of day, since I missed yesterday. Sunshine was updated with episode 22. Hex sent me some more yesterday, so their is another 20 or so new episodes a coming. Also, perhaps the most offensive episode of Friday Night RPG Cartoons (at least according to Dr. Murk) is up, episode 1.8.

You are Listening too . . .
Taxman, by the Beatles off of their big masterpiece Revolver. And may I say a pretty appropriate song for the time of year.

First Revolver. It has been argued to be not only the best Beatles album (along with Rubber Soul, Sgt. Pepper and the White Album) but one of the, if not the best album of all time. The album took off from Rubber Soul, and really began showcasing and experimenting with new stylistic developments which would become even more pronounced with later albums.

There were a number of innovative and new techniques used in the recording of the album. It is one of the first instances of backmasking and backward recording in music history, and not just with lyrics. The album was also one of the first to use the breakthrough technique of Automatic Double Tracking. This allowed a voice to be double recorded, as opposed to singing the song twice. This quickly became a modern music staple after this album. This was also the first album to have not so hidden drug references.

Musically this album runs the gamut even more that it predessecor. From meloncholic Elanor Rigby to the almost whimsical Yellow Submarine, to the Here, There, and Everywhere, which could almost be from their early 1963 music, to a song that even by today's standards seems ultra modern in Tomorrow Never Knows (the wife heard it for the first time the other day and thought it was Beck, until of course the voice), there is a strange mix of music on the album, and it is almost like listening to multiple albums. This is also the last time that the US and UK version of the album were different. I will be exploring a number of songs off this album.

Revolver also heralded Harrison's growth as a songwriter. He contributed 3 songs to the album, incuding this opening track Taxman. As compared to past Harrison pieces, these songs had much more maturity, and artistic growth. The song has a very simple inspiration, taxes . . and as the early American colonists discovered it was very high in jolly old England. It seems, England at the time, had a graduated income tax based upon earnings, and the Beatles were at the top; a 95% tax level. Harrison did most of the song himself, Lennon contributed some lines, specifically the ones calling out then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Harold Wilson, and Edward Heath, the upcoming Prime Minister. McCartney is actually responsible for the guitar solo and the lead guitar. Also, Harrison stated that the chorus was a play of the 60's Batman TV. Show.

Because the song began the album, a fake count in was added to the song. Very distorted deep voice counts in along with Harrison, and listening closely, you can hear McCartney shouting the count in under the distorted one. Harrison's vocals is also double tracked.

The album was also released in the midst of the "Beatles are Bigger than Jesus" controversy, and is also released three weeks before their last live concert. More history tomorrow.

That's right Mammoud.
Stick to your guns, that is why, you are Malach favorite most insane world leader. Keep it up and you too can have your own little screwed up corner of the Middle East . . . well more than it already is.

You are listening too . .
Sorry, we moved out of Rubber Soul, and onto a double A side single the Beatles released at about the same time. Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out. You are listening to the later. These songs were only available in singles until the release of the June 1966 album Yesterday and Today. Yesterday and Today was a US only release, and was significant becuase it not only contained those songs and some other re-releaseses (Yesterday and the songs removed from the US version of Rubber Soul) it also contained 3 songs that would appear two months later on Revolver. It was also significant for it's original cover, affectionatley known as "the Butcher Cover" (at left). Capitol pulled the cover after some backlash in the US. If you have one of these originals they are worth some decent money (there is an unopened one on ebay right now, going for about $8,000).

We Can Work It Out is a very significant song, and one of the Beatles more popular of this era. First it is one of the only post 1963 songs that had fairly equal creation from both McCartney and Lennon, and one of their best until the later materpeice Day In the Life. McCartney and Lennon juxtapose their lyrics brilliantly, with McCartney's slight more positive and Lennon's more negative. The timing change between the McCartney and Lennon parts are also one of the first examples of a extreme timing change on a Beatles record. Harrsion's little sad waltz time harmonium part also work very well, perfectly adding to the contrasting Lennon parts . . you really cannot imagine the song with out them, and they really make the song..

According to McCartney, the song was originally written about his failing relationship with Jane Asher, but as he wrote more, and Lennon added his bit, it became more universal, again similar to The Word and All You Need is Love later.. The textural wash of the dual voice recordings, the fuzzing, and over mixing really begins to signal the direction they were heading. That direction being of course Revolver which is next, are you excited?

The Iraq War
So the House set a firm limit on spending for 8/08 for the Iraq War. No funds available after that date. Dubya aint to happy. Look at it like this. That will make it a 6 year war. That is almost as long as Vietnam, and twice as long as WWII.

Malach's Quote of the Day
No work which is destined to become a classic can look like the classics which have preceded it. In art, as in biology, there is heredity but no identity with the ascendants. Painters inherit characteristics acquired by their forerunners; that is why no important work of art can belong to any period but its own, to the very moment of its creation. It is necessarily dated by its own appearance. The conscious will of the painter cannot intervene. - Juan Gris

Plugs me buckos.
A new 8 1/2 by Eleven has been published, this is strip 514. In addition, there is a new piece of fiction by CJ Owen. It is a cyberpunk/Sci-fi short story called Meat Chassis. It is very good and remind me a bit of William Gibson. Also, it is similar to some of Ben Byrd's more sci-fiesque stuff. I can assure you though, unless someone is really pulling the wool over my eyes, they are two different people.

You are listening too . . .
The Word, by The Beatles, off of Rubber Soul. Again, I am surprised by the lack of number one hits off this album (there were zero). With songs like Michelle, Norweigan Wood, Drive My Car, Nowhere Man, Girl, and In My Life all being very popular Beatles songs. Actually You Won't See Me was a number one hit, for Ann Murray (Lennon repeatedly said it was his favorite Beatles cover of all time). Perhaps because of the experimental nature of the album (though no where near as experimental as late ones), and the less than poppy love songs replaced by moody one. I think this is the last Rubber Soul tune I am going to write about, we will see my mood in a couple of days.

So that leaves us with The Word. The song was written mostly by Lennon, with some help McCartney. Musically, McCartney has stated that they were going for a similar sound to Little Richard's Long Tall Sally. It is definitely a bit more funky and honky tonk than just about anything the Beatles had done before. What's most interesting is the song itself. Lennon admitted it was one of his first attempts at an anthemic political song, though that message gets a bit lost in the lyrics. It was also a pre cursor to a song like All You Need is Love, basically both songs have the same message, All You Need is Love just got across the message a little better.

The song is also notable (like much of the album), with Harrison doing a Harmonium solo, furthering his exploration of Indian music. Also in the recording of heavily compressed and equalized piano (Lennon is playing) a sound that would be popularized with psychedelic music. In addition the Beatles really experiment with harmonies and their voice, getting really high in pitch.

Al Gore keeps sending me emails.

8 1/2 by Eleven updated with strip number 513. Also check out Malach's WoW post on performancing enhancing drugs. It also has a bit to do with the Beatles, and their performance enhancing drugs.

Speaking of the Beatles.
During the Rubber Soul period, Harrison got married to Patty Boyd, and the world famous bigger that Jesus quote from Lennon comes out (March of '66 about a month before they began production on Revolver). The actual statement is as follows. Journalist Maureen Cleave, Evening Standard, decides to ask a religious question outside the norms of regular pop interviews. Lennon is asked his opinion on the Church and God to which he responds: "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue with that; I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first - rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was alright but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me."

That quote would several months later cause quite a bit of controversy in the Bible Belt of the US. It caused some Beatles bonfires, and as many 30 stations, mostly in the Southern US to ban playing the Beatles. An incident also occured in July of '66, which was one of incidents that turned them off from touring. They played before 50,000 fans in Manilla, the Phillipines. Evidently, the Imelda Marcos, invited the boys to show up at a party. They politely refused as was usual for them, but eviedntly insulted the shoe queen. They were basically beaten up by the Manilla police, and the money from their concert was taken from Brian Epstein.

Wow, Arnie.
Did you figure this out all by yourself? Rush has been irrelevant since lick 1995. Little known Ahnold fact. Evidently, the were going to make a Sgt. Rock movie. And of course, at the time (late 80's), they wanted Ahnold to play. Can you just imagine. WWII hero, Sgt. Rock, fighting the germans, with Ahnold shouting: "Take dat you stinkin' Krauts".

Nowhere Man

Plugs
A couple, first 8 1/2 By Eleven strip 512 is loaded, and this one comes with a side of extra corn. Also, Sunshine number 20 is up, and may I add, Sears; send me a check for this one.

You are listening to . . .
Nowhere Man
, by the Beatles, another gem off of Rubber Soul. Yet another classic Beatles song that never hit number 1, though it did hit number 3 in the US. Nowhere Man is rather famous for not being about love, romance, and relationships, like much of their early stuff was, and the beginning of Lennon's (who wrote the majority of this song) philisophical lyrics.

Many of the Beatles fans when hearing the song commented they felt it was about their Parent's Generation, and their lack of an open mind. . . a very interesting allegory. There is also some thought out there that this is about one of several Beatles friends or associates (perhaps more on that tomorrow), Lennon however stated in a 1980 Playboy interview the song was about himself; mainly about writer's block, giving up, and then this thought of a "nowhere man" popping into his mind after a bit of a rest.

This song is also a interesting juxtaposition of old and new Beatles. The Harmonzing, the general guitar work, and simple drum rythmns. Of course the new is the lyrics, and the middle guitar solo. It is also an interesting lead into later similar style songs like Eleanor Rigby and For No One on later albums. Again it shows the lead in to Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, and even their most experimental album, The Beatles (or the White Album, which after listening to these albums pretty extensively over the past few weeks is officially, Malach's favorite Beatle Album.)

The Forever Stamp
Brilliant idea from the US Post Office, I don't know about you, I am buying a bunch in May.

No plugs today.
There will be plenty this week though, so hold tight.

More Beatles stuff.
Yes, I realize the current Beatles song playing is one of their "worst" songs ever. The goal with the song was to show the early use of fuzzbass, and talk about George Harrison, specifically who the McCartney and Lennon thought most of his stuff was bad early in their career, and as he got more experience became a much better song writer (Something and While My Guitar Gently Weeps are only a year or so away).

Sarah Jessica Parker.

Think for Yourself

3.17.2007

Some plugs on this fine night.
Let us see, there is a new Tales of WoW, straight off the press from the Angry Piper. This one is called The Thirty Minute Murk-out. Also, Sunshine number 19 was published today. Happens to be a fave of mine, so much so, I inked and colored the puppy.

Happy St. Paddy's Day.
If you see Whitey Bulger anywhere, toast him a guiness and turn him in for the reward! Honestly the wife is Irish, but I really don't get the idea behind the holiday.

You are listening too . . .
Think for Yourself, by the Beatles. First and foremost of a couple of Harrison penned songs off of Rubber Soul. Within the groups itself Harrison was a weak song writers, and as the groups matured, became a bit proficient, cumulating in Something years later. Someof the distinct aspects of this song, that differ from their earlier stuff, the extensive use of fuzz bass by McCartney, and hallmark sound of the later 60's, this being an early recorded version of that. In additon, some organ can be heard in this song, another early use of that. The song, many people think is about Harrison first wife Patty Boyd, but this would have been penned when they were dating long before they were married and long before the Clapton, Harrison, Ron Wood, Boyd love affair (LAYLA! YOU GOT ME ON MY KNEES!). Not to get off the subject here, but those Boyd sisters were something else in the 60's and 70's. Her sister Jenny got into this rock and roll love triangle with getting in between the lead singer of Donovan and Mick Fleetwood.

Harrison himself had stated, he couldn't really recall what the song was about, but thinks in was some type of veiled anti-goverment thing. Again, not the Beatles best work at the time, but you can see the experimentation with music, instruments, timing, and of course lyrics, which would lead to other things.

How many Pollacks does it take . .

3.16.2007

Some plugs for your early release snow day.
Only Sunshine today, which is a bit ironic considering the weather we had today. Number 18 is up. Expect a few updates this weekend, more Sunshine, a new Tales of WoW, and some more Ben Byrd. It seems to the Piper is a bit upset that the Tales of WoW are not is the correct order they were intially published, we breast buds, send me a list of the order your want them in, and I will change them around.

Some More Beatles.
Well we are in '65, at the release of Rubber Soul. Some events that occurred that year? Ringo's first marriage, 56,000 show up to see them at Shea Stadium (first outdoor rock concert ever), released one film and 4 albums, the last being Rubber Soul in December of '65. In addition the Beatles each recieved their MBE which caused a bit of a political backlash as MBE were usually conferred to military veterans and civic leaders. It resulted in some older MBE recipients to return their MBE (ironically something Lennon did in the the 70's). They also became recreational drug users, most of them doing marijuana pretty regularly, and some of their first experiments with LSD. Another influence on this album, and even more for the next albums.

As for drugs, all the Beatles were big supporters of legalizing Marijuana (McCartney is still to this day) and for mind expansion. They were as big users as any other rock and roll star of that time period, with only Lennon getting really hard core with Heroin later in life.

How's the weather.
So lets see. In New England this year it has been mostly temperate. Two small snowfalls, but mostly in the 40's to 50's. February got cold, and was consistently under 30. Now March has been warm somedays close to 70. So yesterday it was in the mid 50's. Today, we have at least 3" of snow. It was cold, mid 20's, and windy. It is sleeting kind of right now.

Pet Food Recall.

A personal fave, Norweigan Wood, off of Rubber Soul, by the Beatles.

So we begin.

Rubber Soul marked a departure for the Beatles. Highly influenced by folk, Rubber Soul is one of the greatest albums of all time. Highly inspirational in it's own right, Brian Wilson has stated that this was the main inspiration for Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds of course went on to inspire the Beatles's Revolver and Sgt. Pepper. This album marked the beginning to the most creative part of the Beatles discography. Rubber Soul, the next album Revolver, and the next Sgt. Pepper, you have the Beatles at their high point over basically a 2 year span. The Beatles were about to change, subtle at first, and become what would eventually be known as the greatest band of all time.

One of the issues this album suffers from, like much of their early stuff, is a marked difference between the UK and the US versions. Extremely popular songs like Drive My Car and Nowhere Man, were not on the US album, in favor for more folky songs. Nowadays the UK album is considered the standard.

This album, runs quit a gamut, from songs like Drive My Car and If I Needed Someone which are more like their early stuff, and experimental stuff like The Word, and Girl, which were becoming more surreal. A definite music shift to more guitar, a fuzz bass; some of the earliest examples of the latter. A definite maturing in lyrical content;, less sappy love songs in favor of more songs about emotion, and loss. In additon, songs not having to do with love and relationships.

Also surprisingly, there are no number hits off this album, but the two ep singles release with Rubber Soul, Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out (a really amazing song in itself) both hit number one.

A broadened sound, influenced by Bob Dylan, and the Byrds, there were also recording innovations by the Beatles and George Martin; they had begin playing with tape speeds, compressed music instruments (a pre-cursor to psychedlic), and exotic instruments.

Norweigan Wood is especially ground breaking for the time ('65). Lyrically, it is one of their first that in antagonistic toward women, and relationships, and is the first known pop/rock song to use a sitar. It marked a beginning interest in Eastern Spirituality, meditation, and thought, especially for Harrison who eventually became extreme proficient with the Sitar. The album also featured two Harrison songs, and a Lennon-McCartney-Starkey compositon. The exotic instuments, the new recording methods, and the enigmatic lyrics of this album breifly forshadow, what was to come.

Amazing album, a must own, again consider one of the best of all time.

Yesterday

3.14.2007

Some plugs my pretties.
Sunshine 17 is up for your enjoyment, you better enjoy it. Also, there is a new 8 1/2 by Eleven, in which Cinn and Jessica have a mammal beauty contest.

The Beatles.
Again, I'd like to thank everyone who sent me good wished about my Beatles essays I am exploring this this blog, especially those old enough to remember the Beatles (Malach was born in 1972, two years after they broke up). I am going to accumulate them all and make a interactive essay when I am done.

Many of you have asked for a bit more historical information, while I do not want to get into that too deepyl (there are plenty of web resources on that), I do want to set a bit more of HELP! era of the Beatles. That album is the accumulation of early Beatlemania, and a marked switch in tone, musicality, and lyric content from much of the previous albums. In addition, it marks a seperation that begins to develop between McCartney and Lennon, though not as extreme as it will be a few years later. As stated, Yesterday was the first Beatles song that had no involvement of the other Beatles, and it was one of their biggest hits of all time. It gave McCartney some more leadership power in the band, and in the next few years this would develop into a huge power struggle. Lennon had initially formed the band as the Quarrymen in '57, McCartney joined about a year later, eventually molding into the Beatles. There are several former members, Stuart Sutcliffe who died in '62 of a brain hemmorhage and of course Pete Best who was replaced by Ringo in '62 just as they signed their first record contract, who left the band prior to their hitting it big.

Beatles hit it big worldwide in '63, and were constantly touring leading us up to '65 and HELP! in which they and George Martin really began to flex their creative muscles. Also in the same month of releasing the album, the sold out Shea Stadium, being the first outdoor stadium concert in the world, selling 56,000 seats. This of course leads into the masterpiece Rubber Soul, but let not get ahead of ourselves. This, the stress, and inability to recreate some of the music live, and events that eventually led to them all together abandoning touring. Again, that is later in the time line, along with other events. I bet you can't wait until the Paul is Dead conspiracy, got some good sites on that.

Yesterday, is a heart renching song, even listening to it hundreds of times. McCartney has never really talked much about the songs subject, and most feel it has to do with his mother who died from cancer when he was young, or his rocky relationship with Jane Asher. Lennon's mother too had died while he was young (see Julia, later off the The White Album), which is something that drew Lennon and McCartney together at an early age.

Man, someone needs a make over.
So this is not surprising, even if he didn't do it, he would say he did.

Speaking of terrorism.

3.13.2007

Plugs for today.
There is a new fictional essay by Twisted Darkness entitled Dissertation on Emo. It is very well done, done in the vein of a nature documentary, kind of. Also, 8 1/2 by Eleven was updated. Cinn and Jessica continue their conversation on Marine Biology. And as always, the DoMT, gives you sneak previews.

Today, you are listening too .. .
Yesterday off of HELP! by the Beatles. OK, lets get some of the big stuff out of the way. First, this song is the most covered song of all time, and also the song with the most radio airplay. It is also arguably the Beatles biggest all time hit. But like all songs like this, it didn't start out that way. Released at the back end on 1965 in the US only, and released later in the UK in the middle of 1966. This strange song (strange for the Beatles) was really never expected to amount to much, and both time it was released as b-side singles. The Beatles themselves (beyond McCartney who wrote 99.9% of the song), thought the song was unremarkable, and even though the song was completed in early 1964, it was passed up for two until HELP!. In fact the feeling was so strong about the song by the other 3 members, that is the reason for the delay in releasing the UK version of the song. In addition British artist Matt Monro, hit it big with a cover version of the song, 6 months before it's UK release.

The song formation itself was pretty strange. McCartney stated the melody came to him in a dream, which he immediately recorded on piano. It seemed so familar to him, he wasn't sure if he subconciously copied it, and took it around with him to music industry people to see if they had ever heard it before. All through 1964, he constantly played the melody, and no one could come up with lyrics that fit it. The group started calling the song Scrambled Eggs, and would insert silly lyrics eventually figuring our a nice vocalization for it. During a tour of France McCartney completed the song, but after presenting to the Beatles, and George Martin, they all did not like it. So, that is where Martin and McCartney worked on a orchestal arrangment for the song (which started alot of imput from Martin over the next few years). In recordings you can hear McCartney talking to Harrison while strumming, but evidently no other Beatles were involved in the recording.

This song took many a Beatles fan by surprise. It's meloncholic lyrics (especially since McCartney was well known for his upbeat songs), the stripped down nature of the music, and it's maturity. This was later repeated with much success with Michelle, and Elanor Rigby. It also took the Beatle by surprise, especially Lennon, who was for the most part at the time, the group's leader. This song cemented McCartney as a equal partner with Lennon. This song, capped off the morose frenetic nature of HELP!, with songs like the title song, You've Got to Hide Your Love Away; Your Gonna Lose That Girl; Ticket to Ride; and the like. It marked a new era song writing for the group.

Several updates today, yo. Milikin went a bit nuts with the puns on the latest Fetus-X. Yeah it's pretty punny. Jessica continues to show us how stupid she really is in the latest 8 1/2 by Eleven. And there was a very funny, albeit mature and rude Sunshine (number 16) loaded today.

The Pats were $28million under the cap, and even with all the signings, they have only reduced that cap by about $6million. Obvioulsy, last season receiver while OK, were a dissappointment. Also, those Pats fans who are frightened of Stallworth. Let compares.

Plugs, once again.
Sunshine number 15 has been loaded, this one is a fave of mine. Also the DoMT has been updated a bit too.

And just because, HUMPERS!

You are listening too . . .
Help!
by The Beatles off the album of the same name and of course the theme for the film of the same name. Surprisingly, this was one of Lennon's most favorite Beatles songs, this and Strawberry Fields Forever. Very auto-biographical, it was according to Lennon, a rant of sort, about The Beatles meteoric rise to fame, and the problems that it brought along with the rise (Lennon often labeled this period of his life, his Fat Elvis period). It also again signaled, with the album, a moving away from poppy love songs, to a more deep emotional lyrical content and feel. Lennon himself stated he wished it was recorded in a slower, more folk version, but personally, I don't think it would have the same sort of impact. This song is definitley a cry for help, even it is pop state. It also signalled the bands disdain for touring and all toghether they stopped touring one year after the release of the Help! single.

Again, you begin to see The Beatles exploration (along with George Martin, more of Martin later) of music, and the technology available at the time. This song also has some killer harmonizing vocals, remiscient of some The Beach Boys best stuff. You also see a much bigger concentration of rock guitar and guitar rifts in this song.

RIP Richard Jeni
Evidently (while not confirmed as of this post) died of a self inflicted gunshot wound. Too bad, Jeni was very talented, and a very smart comedian. I seem to recall him stating on The Howard Stern Show, that he suffered from depression.

Fat Bug v. Ctrl+Alt+Del part duex

3.10.2007

Any plugs?
Just one, a Deck of Many Things update from the one and only Dr. Robert J. Murk. That is all.

So what did Malach do today?
OK, many of you know how Fat Bug destroyed Ctrl+Alt+Del (warning mature content in link)several months back. Malach has been "attacked" CAD fans for the strip, especially it's veiled references, and recieve one email for someone claiming to be Tim Buckley. I have never published it cause I am not sure it is him, but the gist of it was that I was going to be sued for using CAD characters in my piece of crap. My response was "Dude, parody, bring it on" and I never heard from the person again.

Well, Digital Overlord was this weekend, as well as my wife's Autism conference in the same building. She was one floor up, so of course Malach felt it his duty to create a little mischief, which I did, passing out close to 150 flyer for the comic. We will see what happens there.

Funny story. According to the wife and co-workers, they could of serviced half the kids there as person's with Asperger's Syndrome, and after seen these bottom of barrel no lifers, it was most interesting. In addtion, the wife got hit on by a large group of gaming geeks, I told her to mention she was the wife of Malach the Merciless, but she was too afraid too. Seriously though, take every sterotype of geeks, nerds, locked in the basement, all nighters playing World of Warcraft, lap tops under arm, playing card games to wind down. I think I saw one female in that hall . . . and she was working there. Is this what our world has come too?

The Beatles.
I have gotten a lot of good feedback on my Beatles articles, and history. Many comment from older fans who are surprised someone from Gen X is writing articles about it. I am going to republish them as a interactive essay for Third Option Media, as I redesign that site for Elias.

If I were early man.
I would make two of them, side by side . . . you see where I am going here?

Don't forget.

3.09.2007

Plugity plugs.
A couple today, Sunshine has been updated with number 14, perhaps the best of the bunch so far. Also, there was a small update in The Deck of Many Things today.

Also Malach is working a new deal with Amazon, and now has control over a on-site Amazon store, featuring deals and products my reader might be interested in. It is just off our main store and located here. Current catagories include, RPGS, Software, Books, Music, and I will probably add Games/Toys. I am probably going to catagorize the music. Enjoy, and remember Malach does get small % of sales out there, so it helps support this site, and my extravagent lifestyle.

You are listening too.
I skipped a couple of US releases namely, a reissue of early hits, and The Beatles VI. VI produced one hit, Eight Days a Week, but VI was mostly b-sides of early hits, so there was nothing particulary groundbreaking about it. Which brings us to HELP! .

Now HELP! is best remembered as a psuedo-soundtrack to a movie by the same name. The movie is a sort of cult classic, and is some of the first real creative stuff The Beatles had done whilst high. The Album is also known as the Album before the period of some of the most amazing music ever made and HELP! sometimes get brushed off. HELP! is definitely a transitional album, away from the pop rock, to a more experimental phase, and not to downplay the pop rock, but they were about to go places no one had ever seen. Again at the time there were differences in the UK and US albums, and more albums being released in the US, and this would continue through to Revolver.

One of the first things many Beatles fans noticed about HELP! was that it was the first time The Beatles had really begun to diverge away from happy love songs. Love Me Do was being replaced by stuff like Yesterday. It also shows the huge influence that Bob Dylan was having on the Beatles at the time, especially Lennon who's Hide Your Love Away (and one Malach's favorite all time songs) was basically a Dylan song. The title song is a supposed lamenting on their fame.

We start with Ticket To Ride, the albums first release. Those first few guitar chords, boy do they set a place and time, and take to you mid/late 60's. This was the first single and hit off the album, and again, was very different lyrically than what many Beatles fans were used to. Ringo's drums, the tribal noise really bring this song together, and the overall slowing down of the entire album is a definite nod to folk music. You can see where they are going musically and will end up later that year with Rubber Soul. I am gonna play a few off of this one.

Younger readers, who did not grow up listening to the Beatles, imaginee, the New Kids on The Block, over 3 years, morphed into Guns and Roses. This is what has happened from Meet the Beatles until now.

When our founding fathers made The Constitution, they never saw repeating easily concealable high powered handguns, machine pistols, sub machine guns, assault rifle, and the like. Honestly, I don't have a issue with a person want to own a gun for personal protection, or hunting, but there has to be some limit. It is much to easy for anyone to buy a gun. I can walk down the street of New Bedford and probably buy a gun within 15 minutes illegally, and probably something more than a handgun. This country is much to cowboy, and violent.

Honestly.
I don't see an issue with this as the classes are not required to graduate and the descision is up to the school to offer the courses, my only concern is why stop with the Bible? Why not the Qu'ran or the Talmud?

Yeah the internet is going to blow up!

MORE THAN A FEELING!
Yeah Brad Delp, your dead. The Angry Piper is going to be so upset.

Wow, this is a little ass backwards.
Courtney Love evidently owes someone big time drug REHAB money.

Wow Eddie Van Halen.
Looking good brother, and those missing teeth?

Malach's Quote of the Day.
About a year ago, I started seeing these ads in the paper for 'Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation'. First it was a little ad. The next week, it was twice as big. And after a month, it was a full page-it just took over. Something in that triggered a bunch of associations and projections. Like, what kind of activities do you have to engage in to get to the point where you need to bring a laser into the equation? - Beck

I am Malach and I want to know, who stole the soul?
